Up now are a pair of Captains to help command my growing collection of Free Dwarfs. How will these be on the table? Honestly, they will probably be mediocre! They have fine stats, but top out at CS1 and Def5, which is pretty common, and not really impressive in either direction. They are combat individuals, which isn't great and rarely has been, and in the Champion slot they have just 4 attacks, so won't hold items very well, or be much of a force multiplier. Without mounts, their ability to leverage their Individual status for something like a flier defense role is limited too. They are just around, and vaguely threatening to add a damage in combat. Not bad for your Inspiring, but not great. I think the Warsmiths and assorted Priests will be both more popular and more effective picks generally, and is the direction I am leaning in too. But these are done, for if and when I need some basic Champions to help hold the line.
A Wizkids Champion.
The first is a Wizkids model, based on a Paladin. I bought the two-pack for the leveled-up model to use as a Lord, but that guy isn’t ready yet. I actually really came to like the look of this guy and long mustaches, so we’re pressing him into service now too. No conversions or anything here, just an angry, armored dwarf with a big weapon. The only strike against him is the lack of a full beard! I opted to not give him one with green stuff or anything, and maybe we'll come up with a clever nickname at some point
A Mantic Champion.
Being a fully Mantic model, the first Captain will be immediately drafted lead my Demo list as a very basic champion, around to Inspire and occasionally try to bash things good. While I don't report on my Pathfinder demo games, I do want to fit in a Free Dwarf demo list to get a little more personal experience with them. Any maybe show them off a bit, as the army is proving to be unique in its colors and basing, as I was hoping.
Five Packmasters! And some other guy too. And that's not even all of the conversions.
Many of the other Champions-in-process come from an ebay bundle, which had a load of minor kitbashes, including the second Captain in this post. The coolest conversions by far were a bunch of Pack Masters, which ... are unfortunately not a thing right now, and the Mastiff Packs have likewise disappeared. The Rule of Cool is winning me over though, and I think we'll grab a few of these to use as counts-as Warsmiths down the road, but that's a project and a post for other days.
