Hobby Update: Third Kingdoms of Men General on Winged Beast

My goals here with the game and the blog are to run a lot of different units and lists. Just try things out and then share the results. It’s kind of a “build casually; play competitively” approach, where I am trying to make good game decisions and improve my play, while definitely trying to avoid being “that guy” or running unfun situations or matchups. I’ve had a third Griffon mini around for a few years now, but running it hasn’t seemed sporting, especially since we’ve been trying to grow the community over the last few years with league play, so I haven’t hobbied him up until now. Here he is!

Lots and lots of dry brushing.

Like the others, this griffon is from Reaper, though unlike the others, this is from their Bones / Black line, so the plastic is firmer than the previous minis out of white plastic. This time, I did not build up any support for the beast, and we’ll see how that stands up over time; I can always add a wall or fence or something for him to lean on if needed.

Hobbying-wise, I wanted to keep these griffons different colors to help differentiate them on the table, but I wanted to keep them all in the ballpark of reality for their colorings, with none of them too vibrant or fantastical. I already have a grey one and a brown one, so here I went for a tan one, relying on dry brushing to do a lot of the heavy-lifting on details like the feathers. The General is a spare mini, I think from Gripping Beast’s Gothic Cavalry, and kitbashed with leftover Roman bits from other kits.

Same style as all the rest though.

On the table, the Generals on Winged Beasts have been generally fun and effective, though prone to wavering, and unfortunately they still can’t take Indomitable Will themselves to mitigate this. The more fliers one takes the better they all tend to perform, but multiple generals all flying around on their own wasn’t fluffy, and two have been enough for me, since I generally try to run friendlier lists, and two Generals still had a nice “consular army” feel going for it despite the power.

Three winged Generals is stronger than normal from me, but I need to up the meanness for a clubmate heading out to Masters in late July. I don’t know how often all three will hit the table for regular games, but that indeed an an option now, and I should get to try them all out sometime soon.
